I’m a horror movie buff and so, I gravitate to anything horror, but this year has been remotely disappointing for the horror genre. So many movies are predictable with regurgitated movie plots and jump scares. To save myself the drama, I reduced my expectations. I watched Immaculate with that same reduced expectation and I must say it beat my expectations.
Sydney
If you’re unfamiliar with Sydney then go watch Euphoria. When you do, you’ll see just how much she gave in this movie. She was firm and emotional and dramatic. Quite immaculate to watch— yeah, I know. I couldn’t help using the word.
The point remains that she delivered. Her acting was believable. I was rooting for her every step of the way as she got rid of the bad guys.
The Story
This storyline was oddly horrifically satisfying. You know how something grosses you out, but you just can’t stop watching because it’s good? That’s how I felt about this.
The first scene was enough to show that it was going to be menacing, but I did not see the plot coming, that is until the Immaculate Mis-conception.
See what I did there? Mis-conception. There are at least a million horror movies based on Catholic faith and theology and I doubt if it’s ever going to stop, but it was a breath of fresh air to see something different. You weren’t sure why the bad guys were bad, but you knew they were bad and just kept watching.
If it’s not obvious by now, I’m doing a decent job of not spoiling this movie— entirely.
The Near Escape
I have to commend a horror movie character for trying to break out of their shackles and make a run for it but she should have hid her decoy well enough so as not to draw suspicions. But A for effort anyway.
My Thoughts
Was it worth the watch? You betcha. It was absolutely worth it with the perfect run-time. The ending bit where she had to smash it to smithereens would leave you wondering what it was. I like how the camera doesn’t move in to show whether it’s something to be cheerful for or embarrassed about but focuses on Cecelia’s determination to end it all. That was clever. It allows you to come up with your own conclusions and decide what you would do in her shoes.
I’m fond of the good old possessing script, but like I said, this was good. Sydney is tagged as a producer and I have to say I’m proud of this work. Now, I want to see her with Glenn Powell because it feels like she’s finding herself even more.
